The client version you are using is too old. Please upgrade at http://pidgin.im

If you are using pidgin with ICQ on any current Linux distribution like Interpid, you may discover that 2.5.5 is not yet available in the official repositories.

For now you will have to stick with pre-built packages or simply get rid of ICQ 😉

http://www.getdeb.net/release.php?id=3960

Here is a source for now, 2.5.5 should be released soon on the interpid and hardy repositories:

  • first of all you should remove pidgin and perform apt-get autoremove to uninstall any pidgin dependencies such as pidgin-data and libpurple
  • install pidgin-data from the link above
  • install libpurple0
  • now you can install the pidgin package and you should be free to go 🙂

Citrix Makes XenServer available for free

http://www.citrix.com/English/ps2/products/feature.asp?contentID=1686939

Obviously, this step is taken in order to battle VMware and its free ESXi server.

Compared by the XenServer vs. ESXi feature set, Citrix offers enterprise level technology such as Live Migration (Xen Motion compared to VMotion for ESX) and many others features for free. Also, Xen is teaming up with Microsoft on Hyper-V in deploying Virtualization Management software.

But VMware is also teaming up with Cisco (Fibre Channel over Ethernet, Unified IO Nexus Hardware ), Emulex (Fibre Channel over Ethernet Host Bus Adapters, CNA ) and EMC²

Last week I attended a presentation event by VMware and its peers (Cisco, Emulex, EMC²) and we can expect quite a few cool features & technology to come.

Personal 2008 IT highligts

Debian & the predictable random number generator

Ok this proves that even the best server OS out there has some lame security implementations. Lucky for me I only had to replace about a dozen SSH keys…..

Debian was awarded the pwnie award 2008 in the category EPIC FAIL for this one at BlackHat 2008.

Exchange 2003 and the Greylisting Bug

This one actually pissed me off so much, that I will never ever trust a Microsoft MTA again…. The worst part was the lacking acknowledgement by Microsoft… At least they decided to release a hotfix after the bug was first reported to them in 2006!!!

On the other hand I dont regret putting a lot of time and effort into postfix afterwards.

Netbooks

Starting out as a cool little gadget for computer geeks – the insanely fast development has turned these little machines into a serious alternative for mobile computing. Im very happy with my Aspire One 110L running Ubuntu 8.10 so far combined with my mobile phone for 3G connectivity. My EEE 701 however only lasted for 2 Months.

Might take a shot at the 10 Inch generation this year.

Back to Intel

After more than 10 years of AMD-CPU dominace in my personal and custom assembled machines (since my Intel Pentium 60) i finally chose an Intel based system again. I guess the price has been an important factor to me all those years. Just for the records:

  • AMD 486 SX25
  • AMD 486/100 DX4
  • Intel Pentium 60
  • AMD K6-2 350 Mhz
  • AMD K6-2 500 Mhz
  • AMD Duron 750 Mhz
  • AMD Athlon 1,2 Ghz
  • AMD Athlon XP 1,6 Ghz
  • AMD Athlon 64 XP 3000
  • AMD Athlon 64 x2 3600
  • IntelCore 2 Duo E8400

Googlemail to prevent Mailing under the Influence

gmailblog@blogspot.com

This somehow leads to to several conclusions:

1. Passing allong mangiven responisbility to a machine is now officially cool

2. You have to be drunk to use Googlemail or (insert random Data Sucking/Mining Google Service here)

3. Is Google just testing technology on shutting up those free speech advocates in countries like China?

4. Will Apple release an iDrunk (iDrug) software that will capture your transcending deficit of sanity on the weekend to share with your friends?

5. Will Google be able to stop the increasing stupidity of mankind?
