Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server: In depth Mail Gateway Guide

Ok this is not new but probably one of the best Linux tutorials i have ever seen. The Guide consists of 104 Pages from the server install up to the working thing featuring many screenshots. Here is a list of features this server covers:

  •  Postfix w/Bayesian Filtering and Anti-Backscatter (Relay Recipients)
  • MailScanner (Spamassassin, ClamAV, Pyzor, Razor, DCC-Client)

Googlemail to prevent Mailing under the Influence

gmailblog@blogspot.com

This somehow leads to to several conclusions:

1. Passing allong mangiven responisbility to a machine is now officially cool

2. You have to be drunk to use Googlemail or (insert random Data Sucking/Mining Google Service here)

3. Is Google just testing technology on shutting up those free speech advocates in countries like China?

4. Will Apple release an iDrunk (iDrug) software that will capture your transcending deficit of sanity on the weekend to share with your friends?

5. Will Google be able to stop the increasing stupidity of mankind?

Shuttleworth to invest in enhanced Linux desktop experience

Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical and the Ubuntu Project has recently announced to hire a team of developers working on Desktop related applications such as OpenGL, QT, KDE and Gnome in order to improve desktop experience for Linux Users which is in my opinion an essential requirement for Linux to breach some minor barriers in the main stream Linux usage as a true alternative to proprietary Operating Systems like Window and OS X.

Fortunately this development will also boost other Linux Distributions as well and will help other Open Source Operating Systems like BSD competing to the proprietary desktops.

Managing Bookmarks on multiple machines

Ok, so you’ve got like 2 workstations, a notebook perhaps some netbooks and you have a load of bookmarks you want to have on all machines…. perhaps including your machine @ work….

There is a pretty nifty online bookmark manager plugin from StartAid which will allow you to manage your bookmarks online, publish them to other users and export to XML or HTML.

Get the Extension here

Here are some of the key features taken directly from the addon site:

– Similar feel to built in bookmark manager.
– All your bookmarks are accessible from Firefox and VIA StartAid.com through your personal account
– Built in Side Bar
– No Synchronization required, all changes are real-time
– Import existing bookmarks from your browser or favorite social bookmarking site.
– Your personal profile will allow you to track all your bookmark stats.
– Drag and Drop management system.
– Quick and Detailed bookmarking options.
– Organize bookmarks allows you to move multiple bookmarks and categories at once
– Quick Link buttons for your toolbar

Analyzing and optimizing netbook boot processes

Bootchart is a tool that monitors and graphs your Linux boot processes. The detailed view will allow you to view CPU and disk usage, as well as the timeframe that certain daemons and modules require. This seems to be an interesting option for Netbooks and optimizing OS startup time.

The analysis can be rendered in png, svg or eps format and are dumped to /var/log/bootchart/

Here is an example from my Acer Aspire One running Ubuntu

Ubuntu on the Aspire one A110L

Ubuntu is up and running properly and the most important devices are running. I had a USB IDE adapter handy so i installed it from the new 8.04.1 CD release.

WiFi will not run out of the box install, here is a quick tutorial to get it running http://wiki.robinward.com/doku.php?id=aao

The install will require some tweaking in order to get everything running nice and smooth. Especially Firefox ist laggy at some time.

I will add some more stuff to the wiki page regarding the UME interface and card reader installation.

Here is a screenshot of ume running in XFCE. As you can see the formatting is a bit buggy

Ubuntu UME

my Acer Aspire One 110L arrived

Got my Acer Aspire One 110L yesterday and just upgraded the Ram from 512 MB to 1,5GB, which is a real pain compared to other Notebooks with a dedicated access bay to the SO-DIMM slot. 0-Day warranty destruction is a must 😉

Here is a video documenting the Ram upgrade

The display quality is really amazing regarding the size of the Netbook. Very clear and sharp but it might take me some time to geht used to the glossy display type.

Overall the build quality is very good although the shiny cover will have your fingerprints all over the place 😀

I was having quite a hard time with the operating system – i simply hate yum because the performance sucks pretty bad when installing applications. The user interface is OK i guess – the Xandros Desktop on the Eee PC is far better (and its Debian powered 🙂 )

I will be going for Ubuntu – either the Netbook remix or the new Ubuntu UME.

Some more footage will follow…
